Shielding Container
Shielding Container
a device for the temporary storage or transportation of radioactive substances, assuring the safety of service personnel within the limits of accepted norms. In its construction a shielding container is usually made in the form of a lead chamber faced with steel or a steel chamber. On the face of the shielding container is a hermetic seal or cap. For the removal of the heat liberated in the lead by the absorption of radiation, water or air cooling is provided in certain shielding containers. Light laboratory shielding containers are portable or are mounted on swivel casters. Special heavy-duty shielding containers for the transport of burned-up fuel elements from nuclear reactors are mounted on movable platforms.
