STEP course

A distance-learning programme from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, which is aimed primarily at Foundation Year trainees with an interest in pursuing surgery as a career, but which is intended to be useful for all FY trainees because the course material is applicable to surgical and medical specialties. The STEP course’s 4 modules cover an array of topics, including doctor-patient relationships, legal and ethical issues, patient preparation, post-procedural patient management, assessment of the acutely ill patient, and communication with colleagues; practical procedures and basic surgical skills are covered in the final module. Each topic has study references and links that are available on the eSTEP website. The STEP also includes online tutorials for which a certificate of completion is available to add to one’s portfolio.
