Sommerfeld law for doublets

Sommerfeld law for doublets

[′zȯm·ər‚felt ′lȯ fər ′dəb·ləts] (atomic physics) According to the Bohr-Sommerfeld theory, the splitting in frequency of regular or relativistic doublets is α2 R (Z- σ)4/ n 3(l + 1), where α is the fine structure constant, R is the Rydberg constant of the atom, Z is the atomic number, σ is a screening constant, n is the principal quantum number, and l is the orbital angular momentum quantum number.
