Shilder, Nikolai
Shil’der, Nikolai Gustavovich
Born 1828; died Mar. 13 (25), 1898, in St. Petersburg. Russian genre painter.
In the 1850’s, Shil’der studied under B. P. Villeval’de at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, where he became an academician in 1861. Influenced by P. A. Fedotov, he devoted his creative work to the “little man.” Shil’der depicted scenes in a straightforward manner rather lacking in subtlety, for example, The Temptation (1856 or 1857, Tret’iakov Gallery, Moscow) and Forced Marriage (Russian Museum, Leningrad).
