Susunai Range
Susunai Range
a mountain range in the southern part of the island of Sakhalin. The Susunai Range measures 55 km in length and has elevations ranging from 500 to 1,000 m; the highest peak is Mount Chekhov (1,047 m). The range is composed of metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Its slopes are covered with fir and spruce taiga with sparse stands of Kuril bamboo and thickets of dwarf stone pine. Residents of the city of Iuzhno-Sakhalinsk, which is situated at the foot of the range, use the mountains for recreation, hiking, and winter sports.
