, town (1991 est. pop. 15,624), capital of Bragança dist., NE Portugal, in Trás-os-Montes. It is of interest because of its castle, seat of the Braganza family, long the royal family of Portugal (1640–1910).

The terrain is rough and the winters cold except along the Douro River in the hilly vineyard district, which yields the famed port wine grapes, and in warm tributary valleys, where olives and other crops are grown. Mining is an important industry in the mountains.
