On central Gulf coast of FL, south of Tampa; organized May 14, 1921 from Manatee County. Name Origin: Variously attributed to Spanish and Indian sources. One version states that the Spanish gave this name to the area, with the meaning 'place of dancing'; another explanation is that this was the site of a Seminole village named Sarasota, meaning 'point of rocks.'
