barbourin
barbourin
A potent GPIIb-IIIb anticoagulant obtained from the venom of a southeastern pygmy rattlesnake (Sistrurus miliarius barbouri). It is a disintegrin that binds tightly to the fibrinogen receptor glycoprotein IIb/IIIa due to its KGD (Lys-Gly-Asp) amino-acid motif . While barbourin showed promise as a therapeutic agent, by the late 1990s it proved ineffective.Barbourin’s binding site has the amino acid sequence, lysine-glycine-aspartic acid (KGD), which is more specific than other binding sites in peptides, for which RGD arginine-glycine-aspartic acid is the norm.
