Sassandra

 

a river in West Africa, in the Republic of the Ivory Coast. The Sassandra measures 650 km long and drains a total area of 75,000 sq km. It originates in the eastern spurs of the Leone-Liberian Upland and empties into the Gulf of Guinea. The river is fed by rain. The water level begins to rise in July, reaching its maximum in September or October. The mean annual flow rate in the lower course is 425 cu m per sec. The Sassandra is unnavigable due to a large number of rapids and waterfalls.
