Location:24 miles off Interstate 8, north of Winterhaven, just east of Yuma, AZ.Park's remote location requires visitors to drive over 18 miles of dirtroads that are passable for cars and vehicles with trailers andmotorhomes, but can be impassable in summer thunderstorms. Travelers onthis road should carry extra water and other essential supplies.
Facilities:54 primitive family campsites (1 site @di), group camp, 2 boat-in groupcamps, solar showers, chemical toilets (é), picnic areas (é),hiking trails, boat ramps.
Activities:Camping, fishing, hiking, boating, swimming, water-skiing, wildlife viewing, guided tours.
Special Features:Area was the site of a gold mining town in the 1800s, and visitors canhike to the ruins of the mill sites. Eight miles of the lower ColoradoRiver are the recreation area's eastern border, providing opportunitiesfor fishing and water sports. Temperatures at Picacho range from awintertime low of 20 degrees to a summertime high of 120; the idealtime to visit is from mid-October to the end of April.
