Artificial Life

(algorithm, application)(a-life) The study of syntheticsystems which behave like natural living systems in some way.Artificial Life complements the traditional biologicalsciences concerned with the analysis of living organisms byattempting to create lifelike behaviours within computers andother artificial media. Artificial Life can contribute totheoretical biology by modelling forms of life other thanthose which exist in nature. It has applications inenvironmental and financial modelling and networkcommunications.

There are some interesting implementations of artificial lifeusing strangely shaped blocks. A video, probably by thecompany Artificial Creatures who build insect-like robots inCambridge, MA (USA), has several mechanical implementations ofartificial life forms.
