Sousse(also Susa), a city on the eastern coast of Tunisia, on the Gulf of Hammamet. Population, 70,000 (1973). Sousse is the capital of the vilayet of Sousse and an important industrial and transportation center. A port, with a freight turnover of 393,000 tons (1974), it is a highway junction and has a railroad station. Among the city’s enterprises are plants for the production of textiles and vegetable oil, metalworking plants, and a plant for assembling motor vehicles. Handicrafts from saffian are also produced. Sousse has a thermal electric power plant. The city was founded at the beginning of the first millennium B.C. as Hadrumetum by the Phoenicians and was an important center of the Carthaginian state. Between the second century B.C. and the fifth century A.D. it was controlled first by Rome and then by Byzantium. In the late seventh century it was conquered by the Arabs. Sousse still has numerous remains of Roman buildings and catacombs. The medieval part of the city is surrounded by walls (859) and has several architectural monuments, including the Great Mosque (850). Since the mid-20th century the New Town has developed near the port, beyond the walls of the Old Town. Sousse has museums of archaeology and Islamic art.
