DictionarySeepicornavirusPicornaviridae
Picornaviridae A viral family made up of the small (18–30 nanometer) ether-sensitive viruses that lack an envelope and have a ribonucleic acid (RNA) genome. The name is derived from “pico” meaning very small, and RNA for the nucleic acid type. Picornaviruses of human origin include the following subgroups: enteroviruses (polioviruses, coxsackieviruses, and echoviruses) and rhinoviruses. There are also picornaviruses of lower animals (for example, bovine foot-and-mouth disease, a rhinovirus). Pi·cor·na·vir·i·dae (pī-kōr'nă-vir'i-dē), A family of very small (20-30 nm) ether-resistant, nonenveloped viruses having a core of positive sense single-stranded infectious RNA enclosed in a capsid of icosahedral symmetry with 60 capsomeres. Numerous species (including the polioviruses, coxsackieviruses, and echoviruses) are included in the family. There are five accepted genera: Enterovirus, Rhinovirus, Hepatovirus, Cardiovirus, and Aphthovirus.
