Electoral Commission

 

a collective body in the USSR, consisting of representatives of public organizations such as trade unions, cooperatives, and party organizations. Electoral commissions are created to run elections to representative bodies of state power and the people’s courts. The electoral commissions ensure that elections are conducted in accord with electoral law: they are responsible for the correct compiling of lists of voters, and they maintain the proper procedure and determine the results of the voting. There are central, territorial, district, and local electoral commissions.
