Established: Authorized on October 15, 1966; established on October 5, 1972.
Location:Along Lake Superior on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, between Munising and Grand Marais. The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore/Hiawatha National Forest visitor information center is at the junction of MI 28 and County Road H-58 in Munising.
Facilities:Campgrounds (é), picnic area, rest rooms (é), boat ramp, visitor centers (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail.
Activities:Camping, hiking, swimming, boating, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing.
Special Features:Situated on Lake Superior, Pictured Rocks was established as the country's first national lakeshore. It features multicolored sandstone cliffs, broad beaches, sand dunes, waterfalls, inland lakes, wetlands, hardwood and coniferous forests, and a variety of wildlife. At its widest point the lakeshore is only 6 miles and hugs the Superior shoreline for more than 40 miles.
