Vianu, Tudor

Vianu, Tudor

Born Dec. 27, 1897, in Giurgiu; died May 21, 1964, in Bucharest. Rumanian literary scholar and philosopher; academician of the Rumanian Academy.

Vianu’s works Art and the Beautiful (1931) and A esthetics (vols. 1-2, 1934—36) were an attempt to give a systematic account of the range of positivist aesthetic ideas of ancient and modern times. They are still significant as a historical review of aesthetic categories. His works Problems of Style and Literary Art (1955) and Problems of Metaphor and Other Works on Stylistics (1957) resulted from a deep study of the development of literature as a whole.
