Verkhniaia Salda

a city (since 1938) in Sverdlovsk Oblast, RSFSR. Located on the Salda River (a tributary of the Tagil). Site of a railroad station on the Nizhnii Tagil-Alapaevsk line. Population, 46,000 (1969). The city grew out of a settlement attached to a metallurgical plant that was founded in 1760. The metalworking and metallurgical industries are well developed. The general-technical department of the Ural Polytechnical Institute is located in Verkhniaia Salda.
