pine mouth syndrome

pine mouth syndrome

A condition characterised by cacogeusia, specifically metallogeusia (perceived metallic taste), after ingestion of raw, cooked and processed (as in pesto) pine nuts (Pinus edulis) and other Pinus species. It is unknown if a specific species of pine nut is implicated.
Clinical findings
Cacogeusia begins ±24 hours after ingestion of a handful of pine nuts, worsens on post-exposure day 2 and resolves within a few days; some patients complain of abdominal cramping and nausea.
