Belenets, Aleksei Ivanovich

Born Mar. 5 (17), 1887, at Eisk. Prominent in Soviet economic and party affairs. Member of the Communist Party since 1903. From a sailor’s family. A fitter in a railroad workshop.

In 1905 at Rostov Belenets was a member of the Temernitskii District Party Committee, the head of a fighting druzhina (unit), and a participant in the armed uprising, after which he was subjected to repression. In 1911 he carried on party work in Chita, Irkutsk, and Tomsk. After the February Revolution of 1917 he was a member of the Tomsk Committee of the RSDLP (Bolshevik) and chairman of the Tomsk soviet of workers’ deputies. In October 1917 he became chairman of the Tomsk Military Revolutionary Committee and from December 1917 to June 1918 was the chairman of the provincial executive committee, chairman of the Tomsk Provincial Committee of the RCP (Bolshevik), and a member of the Central Executive Committee of the Soviets of Siberia (Tsentrosibir’). From July 1918 till August 1919 he was in prison, having been jailed by the White Guard authorities. He took part in the liquidation of Kolchak’s forces and in 1919 was a member of the Irkutsk Committee of the RCP (B). In May 1920 he became deputy chairman of the Tomsk Provincial Revolutionary Committee and chairman of the Provincial Bureau of the RCP (B). He was a delegate to the Tenth Congress of the RCP (B) in 1921 and participated in the suppression of the Kronstadt anti-Soviet mutiny. Beginning in 1921 he was engaged in party work in Moscow. After 1926 he was a manager of various factories in the system directed by the Supreme Council On the National Economy of the USSR and was involved in other economic work. He was a delegate to the Sixteenth Congress of the CPSU (Bolshevik). He fought in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45. In 1951 he retired on a special pension. He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and several medals.
