Ugolev, Aleksandr

Born Mar. 9,1926, in Dnepropetrovsk. Soviet physiologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966).

Ugolev graduated from the Dnepropetrovsk Medical Institute in 1948. He worked in Leningrad at the Stomatological Institute from 1949 to 1955 and in Moscow at the Institute of Normal and Pathological Physiology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR from 1955 to 1960. In 1960 he joined the I. P. Pavlov Institute of Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, where he became director of the laboratory of nutrition physiology in 1963.

Ugolev’s work deals mainly with the physiology of digestion and nutrition. Ugolev discovered membrane-mediated (parietal) digestion (1959) and developed the theory of the threefold activity of the digestive system: cavitary digestion, membrane-mediated digestion, and absorption. He also formulated the excretory theory of the origin of external and internal secretions, the theory of the digestive-transport conveyer, and the metabolic theory of appetite regulation. Ugolev was the first to remove an entire duodenum under experimental conditions, a procedure that led to the discovery of the nondigestive hormonal function of the intestine.

Ugolev received the Pavlov Prize of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1963. He has also been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
