Teberda

a city (until 1971, a settlement) in the Karachaevo-Cherkess Autonomous Oblast, Stavropol’ Krai, RSFSR, under the jurisdiction of the Karachaevsk city soviet. Teberda lies on the northern slopes of the Greater Caucasus at an elevation of 1,280–1,420 m, in the valley of the Teberda River, a tributary of the Kuban’. It is situated on the Sukhumi Military Road, 90 km south of the railroad station of the Dzheguta, the terminus of a railroad branch from the Armavir-Baku line. Teberda is a climatic health resort. Summers are moderately warm, with a mean August temperature of 16°C, and winters are mild, with a mean January temperature of –3°C. Annual precipitation is 690 mm. The city has sanatoriums for patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. There are mountain-climbing camps and tourist centers in the region, especially in the Dombai Poliana.

Its bed is pebbly and abounds in boulders. There are several waterfalls along the Teberda. Fifty-five percent of the river’s water is derived from snow and glaciers, for there are about 100 glaciers in the river basin. The water level is highest in July and August. The mean flow rate 45 km from the mouth is 27.2 cu m per sec. In the winter the river is covered with sludge ice, but there is no solid freeze-up. The city and health resort of Teberda is situated on the Teberda River, and the city of Karachaevsk is at the mouth of the river. The Sukhumi Military Road runs along the river valley. The Teberda Preserve is in the upper course of the Teberda River. There are numerous mountaineering camps and tourist centers in the river basin.
