Pizhma

an urban-type settlement in Tonshaevo Raion, Gorky Oblast, RSFSR. Railroad station on the Gorky-Kotel’-nich line. Pizhma has a logging and timber distribution establishment. The Al’tsevskoe Peat Company is located in the settlement.

a river in Gorky and Kirov oblasts, RSFSR, a right tributary of the Viatka. It is 305 km long and drains an area of 14,660 sq km. The Pizhma meanders through a plain, receiving numerous tributaries. It is fed primarily by snow. The mean flow rate is approximately 90 cu m per sec. The river freezes in mid-November, and the ice breaks up in the second half of April. The Pizhma is used for floating timber and is navigable for a distance of 144 km from the mouth.

a river in the Komi ASSR, a left tributary of the Pechora River. It is 389 km long and drains an area of 5,470 sq km. The Pizhma originates in Lake Iamozero, in the Timan Range, and is called the Pechorskaia Pizhma to its confluence with the largest right tributary, the Svetlaia. It is fed by various sources, predominantly snow. The mean flow rate is 55 cu m per sec, with a maximum of more than 800 cu m per sec. The river freezes in late October or early November, and the ice breaks up in late April or early May. The lower course is navigable.
