Tocopilla

a city in northern Chile, in Antofagasta Province. Population, 24,800 (1965). Tocopilla, a port on the Pacific Ocean, has a freight turnover of more than 1 million tons (1972). It has a copper smelter and a steam power plant. Industries include food processing and fishing. Copper (from the Chuquica-mata deposit) and saltpeter are mined and exported.
