Sidorov, Vladimir Nikolaevich

Born Dec. 4(17), 1903, in Riazan’; died Mar. 29, 1968, in Moscow. Soviet linguist. Doctor honoris causa (1963).

Sidorov graduated from Moscow University in 1926. He worked at the Scientific Research Institute of Linguistics from 1931 to 1933 and at the institutes of linguistics and the Russian language of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1944 to 1968. He taught at the Moscow Municipal Pedagogical Institute from 1932 to 1934 and from 1944 to 1948 and at Moscow State University in 1946 and 1947. Sidorov was one of the founders of the Moscow phonological school, the fundamental tenets of which he and R. I. Avanesov set forth in Outline of the Grammar of the Russian Literary Language (1945). Sidorov’s works on historical phonetics and dialectology significantly furthered the study of the history of the phonetic system of Russian. He was one of the compilers and editors of the Dictionary of the Language of Pushkin (1956–61). He also studied orthography and stage pronunciation.
