A quality improvement method used to implement changes in medical practice patterns in areas where therapeutic advances occur at a rapid rate. The PDSA cycle was developed and popularised by Deming in the 1950s; it is widely used for quality improvement and forms the core of the ISO 9000 standard.
Plan-do-study-act cycle
• Plan: Review existing knowledge from practice settings and medical literature to formulate a plan.
• Do: Implement plan.
• Study: Assess effects of implemented changes.
• Act: Review the changes and modify the changes for the next cycle.
