participants in a peasant uprising in France from the 1360’s to the 1380’s. The uprising began in 1363 in Auvergne; in the 1380’s it spread to Languedoc, Poitou, Limousin, Rouergue, Provence, and Dauphiné. In addition to the peasants, the inhabitants of many small cities and the craftsmen of certain major cities—including Montpellier, Toulouse, Narbonne, and Nîmes —joined the movement. The rebels refused to pay taxes, killed tax collectors, and destroyed feudal castles and estates. In 1384 the main forces of the Tuchins were defeated, but individual bands were still active as late as 1390.
