The first schools for young workers were established in 1943 and were called schools for adolescents working at enterprises; in 1944 they were renamed schools for young workers. The schools, which offered general educational training comparable with seven-year and secondary schools, covered the fifth through seventh grades and fifth through tenth grades. In 1958 the schools for young workers were renamed evening (shift) secondary general-education schools (seeEVENING EDUCATION).
