Writer John Broome and artist Carmine Infantino's tale introduces penny ante crook Roscoe Dillon, who twists his childhood fascination with gyroscopes into a career as the Top, a thief who spirals like the toy from which he takes his name. The Top keeps the Fastest Man Alive on his toes with his rapidly revolving, giant-sized “atomic grenade,” around which the hero must continue to run to stop it from detonating. For years Dillon spun back to confront the Flash with his top-like weapons, often teaming with the Flash's Rogues' Gallery. In the 1970s, the Top dated Captain Cold's sister Lisa Snart (aka the Golden Glider), and evolved a form of mind over matter that made him hyper-sensitive to the Flash's superspeed, a vulnerability that proved fatal in The Flash vol. 1 #243 (1976). The Top refused to roll over and play dead, however. Dillon's implacable spirit briefly possessed the bodies of Barry Allen's father, Henry, and later, U.S. senator Thomas O'Neill. In the wake of the best-selling miniseries Identity Crisis (2004–2005), it was revealed that the Top was one of several DC Comics supervillains whose minds had been altered by the Justice League's Zatanna the Magician. Once his memories were restored, the resurrected Dillon—boasting an additional, vertigo- inducing superpower—swore vengeance against Wally (Flash III) West by using his mind-over- matter gifts to return reformed rogues to their previous sinister states, and villain fought villain in a 2005 Flash story arc titled “Rogues War.” In Flash vol. 2 #222 (2005) the Top was killed by Flash-foe Captain Cold, who froze and then shattered Dillon. With his gift for comebacks, however, the Top may yet spin again.
