Mainly a commercial center, Aracaju has cotton-spinning and weaving industries. It also produces leather, salt, bananas, and chemicals. Limestone is found nearby. The city was founded in 1855, when it replaced São Cristovão as state capital. Aracaju is the site of the Federal Univ. of Sergipe. |
