specialist training

specialist training

The training of a medically qualified doctor (a specialist registrar—SpR), in the UK based on the system that was in place from 1996 until 2006—the “Orange Book” standard (Guide to Specialist Registrar Training). With the Modernising Medical Careers initiative, education re-focused on specialty training—the “Gold Guide” standard (Guide to Postgraduate Specialty Training)—and as of 2007, trainees are called specialty registrars (StRs and their training years abbreviated as ST1, ST2, ST3, etc).
