Q-Boat

during World War I (1914–18), a merchant ship especially equipped to combat submarines. Q-boats were outfitted with artillery or torpedoes concealed behind removable panels or otherwise ingeniously camouflaged. On occasion, Q-boats were used to tow special mines. The boat’s camouflage lured enemy submarines into close range, at which time the Q-boat would suddenly open fire.
