ScorpaenaScorpaenaa genus of fishes of the family Scorpaenidae. They are distributed in subtropical and tropical seas. Two species are found in the USSR, in the Black Sea. The scorpion fish Scorpaena porcus is 7–13 cm long (sometimes up to 30 cm). There are cutaneous outgrowths over the eyes. The coloration is protective; after molting, which occurs once a month, it becomes brighter. The fish is sedentary, hiding on the sea bottom among rocks and algae. When its prey appears (small fishes, worms, crustaceans), the scorpion fish makes a short, rapid assault. The roe are pelagic. The spiny rays of the dorsal, anal, and ventral fins are equipped with poison glands. The fish, which is caught unintentionally with other fishes, has tasty flesh. Scorpaena
