Riadok

Riadok

 

in Russia from the 15th to the 17th century, a settlement of merchants and artisans and the center of a pogost or volost in the Novgorod Land. Riadki were located on waterways. They were settlements that were intermediate between rural and urban settlements. Merchants and artisans who inhabited a riadok also farmed. In the 17th century certain riadki, for example, Tikhvin, Povenets, Valdai, and Vyshnii Volochek, became posady and subsequently cities.
