Special Features:This "refuge-within-a-refuge" is the site of an effort to rescue the black-footed ferret, one of North America's most endangered animals. Since black-footed ferrets depend heavily on black-tailed prairie dogs, refuge staff has begun related efforts to increase the abundance and distribution of prairie dog towns.
Habitats: 20,000 acres of designated wilderness: native prairie, forested coulees, river bottoms, and "breaks" badlands.
Access: Limited; contact refuge office.
Wild life: Black-footed ferrett, prairie dogs, white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, bighorn sheep, pronghorn, coyotes, waterfowl, game birds.
