Tunkin, Grigorii Ivanovich

 

Born Sept. 30 (Oct. 13), 1906, in the village of Chamovo, Arkhangel’sk Oblast. Soviet diplomat and expert in international law. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1974). Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1972). Member of the CPSU since 1939.

Tunkin graduated from the Moscow Institute of Law in 1935 and began his diplomatic career in 1939. He served as head of the treaty and legal department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR from 1952 to 1965, and he was a member of the United Nations International Law Commission from 1957 to 1966. He has been a member of the board of curators of the Academy of International Law, and he became chairman of the Soviet International Law Association in 1957.

Tunkin holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Paris. He has been awarded five orders and various medals.
