Rif a mountain chain in the Atlas Mountains, in northwestern Morocco. The Rif has a maximum elevation of 2,456 m. Composed chiefly of limestones, it is dissected by the canyons of numerous rivers. Maquis and forests of cork oak grow on the lower parts of the northern slopes; coniferous forests of arborvitae, juniper, and cedar occur at higher elevations.
