Syrians

(Syrian Arabs), the nation and basic population of Syria. Population, approximately 6.4 million (1974, estimate). More than 200,000 other Syrians live abroad, chiefly in South America. The Syrians speak the Syrian dialect of Arabic. About 85 percent are Muslims, chiefly Sunni; the rest are Christians, including Orthodox, Catholics, and Maronites. A few Syrians cling to the clan-tribal structure; the most important tribes are the Fedaan, Had-al-Diyin, Mawali, Beni Haled, and Umur. The chief occupations of Syrians are crop cultivation and semi-nomadic stock raising. Some Syrians work in industry.
