West Australian Current

 

a cold current of the Indian Ocean along the western shores of Australia. It is the northern branch of the West Wind Drift. The current flows from south to north. Its temperature in February ranges from 19°C in the south to 26°C in the north; in August, from 15° to 21°C, respectively. Its salinity is 35.5-35.7 parts per thousand; its speed is 0.7-0.9 km/hr. In the tropics of the southern hemisphere, the West Australian Current becomes the South Equatorial Current.
