wiggles
wiggles[scientific computation] In solving partial differentialequations by finite difference and similar methods, wigglesare sawtooth (up-down-up-down) oscillations at the shortestwavelength representable on the grid. If an algorithm isunstable, this is often the most unstable waveform, so itgrows to dominate the solution. Alternatively, stable (thoughinaccurate) wiggles can be generated near a discontinuity by aGibbs phenomenon. |
