There is a small crest on the head. The back is rusty brown with speckles, and the abdomen is whitish. The wood lark is found in Europe, northwestern Africa, and Asia Minor. In the USSR the species is found as far east as the Volga River and the Caspian Sea. The wood lark is migratory. It inhabits forest glades and edges, as well as pine groves in dune areas. The bird’s song is a repetition of “iula, iula, iula.” The wood lark nests on the ground. A clutch contains three to five eggs, which are incubated by the female for 13 to 15 days. The diet consists of insects and seeds. |
