Zalesskii, Viacheslav Konstantingvich
Born Aug. 22 (Sept. 3), 1871, in Kharkov; died there Nov. 10, 1936. Soviet plant physiologist and microbiologist; corresponding member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (1925).
Zalesskii graduated from the University of Kharkov in 1893 and became a professor there in 1903. His main works deal with the chemical physiology of plants, soil microbiology, and plant pathology. Zalesskii elucidated the role of potassium nitrate and carbohydrates in protein synthesis, studied the role of phosphorous and iron compounds and conversion of nucleoproteins in plants, and found carboxylase in higher plants.
