Zhivopisets

Zhivopisets

(Painter), weekly magazine published in St. Petersburg by N. I. Novikov from April 1772 to June 1773, characterized by its political acumen and its variety of satirical genres. “Excerpt From a Journey of I. T***” and “Letters to Falalei,” both of which contained sharp criticisms of serfdom, appeared in Zhivopisets. The journal ridiculed the blind worship of everything French, careerism, and the vices of the nobility. Government persecution forced it to cease publication.
