Zhuhai (jo͞o-hī), city (1994 est. pop. 308,600), S Guangdong prov., on the Pearl River, N of Macau. Designated a special economic zone in 1979, the city has benefited greatly from its proximity to Macau. It has a variety of industries, including textiles, electronics, fishing, and tourism. A major airport opened there in 1995, the same year that saw the opening of the Zhuhai port, a deepwater harbor built on Gaolan Island. The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge (opened 2018), the main section of which spans the Pearl River estuary with a 14.2 mi (22.9 km) bridge and 4.2 mi (6.7 km) tunnel, connects Zhuhai to Hong Kong. The name sometimes appears as Chu-hai. |
