Zhukov, Anatolii Borisovich

Born July 24 (Aug. 6), 1901, in Kharkov. Soviet forestry scientist, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966).

Zhukov graduated from the Kharkov Institute of Agriculture and Forestry in 1923. He worked in experimental forestry at the Central Forest Experimental Station of the Ukraine (1923–30), in the Institute of Forestry in Kharkov (1930–37) and Gomel’ (1938–42), in the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Forestry and Mechanization of Forestry (1942–56), and in the Forestry Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1956–58). He was the director of the Forestry and Wood Institute of the Siberian branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1958. His main works dealt with oak forests and their renewal, the technology of creating state shelterbelts and oak groves of industrial importance, and methods of increasing the productivity of the forests of the USSR. Zhukov was the first to suggest the specialization of forestry and the development of a system of forest management determined by the level of development of forestry. Some of his studies are concerned with the technical properties of pine, oak, ash, and other kinds of wood in relation to the conditions under which they grow. He was awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and medals.
