aerodynamic braking
aerodynamic braking n 1. (Aeronautics) the use of aerodynamic drag to slow spacecraft re-entering the atmosphere 2. (Aeronautics) the use of airbrakes to retard flying vehicles or objects 3. (Aeronautics) the use of a parachute or reversed thrust to decelerate an aircraft during landing aerodynamic braking
aerodynamic braking Blocker door type thrust reverser.Decelerating an aircraft by using means other than wheel brakes. The aerodynamic braking can be done by one or more of the following methods: i. Keeping the nose of the aircraft high with the nose-wheel off the ground. This technique is normally used in combat aircraft. This is the most common usage. ii. Using airbrakes or a drogue parachute. Airbrakes are used by airliners, whereas drogue chutes are used by combat aircraft. iii. Using reverse thrust in jet engines or reverse pitch in the case of propeller aircraft. |
