Archaeoptera

an order of extinct, very early winged insects. They are characterized by solid leathery wings with faint venation in which only the basic trunks of the veins are distinguishable. Archaeoptera are of interest in explaining the very earliest stages in the rise of winged insects. A single representative of Archaeoptera, Eopterum devonicum, has been found in the Upper Devonian deposits of the Timan Mountains (USSR).
