Benelux Economic Union

Benelux Economic Union

An intergovernmental organization consisting of Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. Created in 1958 and made effective in 1960, it allows the free movement of goods, services, capital and workers between the three countries. Decisions the governing bodies of the Benelux Economic Union make must be ratified by the parliaments of the three countries. While the Union remains in force, many of its responsibilities have been transferred to the European Union. It is the successor to the Benelux Customs Union.
