Beliaev, Nikolai Ivanovich

Born May 15 (27), 1877, in Ponevezh, Kovensk Province; died May 26, 1920. Russian metallurgist.

After graduating from the St. Petersburg Technological Institute in 1902, Beliaev worked at the Putilov Plant until 1916; he started a metallographic laboratory there in 1904. He began teaching at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute in 1909 and became a professor at the Moscow Mining Academy in 1919. Beliaev directed the construction of Russia’s first electric steel foundry, Elektrostal’ (Moscow Oblast), which began production at the end of 1917. He was one of the creators of the domestic steel alloy industry.
