Birgandj
a city in southern Nepal, in the Terai. Population, 11,000 (1961). Important transportation point on the India-Katmandu highway and on the Amlekhgandj-Raxaul (India) railroad line. Birgandj is an important industrial center of the country, with plants producing sugar and agricultural equipment (built with the help of the USSR) and the jute, cotton, and tobacco industries.
