Enakievo

 

a city in Donetsk Oblast, Ukrainian SSR, on the Bulavin River (of the Mius basin). It has a railroad station. Population, 92,000 (1971; 24,300 in 1926; 89,000 in 1939). It arose in 1883 in connection with the mining of the rich coal deposits of the Donbas. Today it is a major center for coal mining and ferrous metallurgy. Factories include the Enakievo Metallurgical works, Stroidetal’ (a building materials plant), and plants handling coke-chemicals, cement, large panels for housing construction, motor-vehicle repair, and reinforced-concrete structures. There are also several food-processing enterprises, including a meat-packing combine, a baking combine, and a dairy, as well as light industry, including a sewing factory. A general technology department of the Donetsk Polytechnic Institute is located there, along with mining and metallurgical technicums and a technicum of Soviet commerce.
